Babylonian King Hammurabi Relief

In the sun-baked plains of ancient Mesopotamia, a monumental figure emerged: King Hammurabi of Babylon, reigning from 1792 to 1750 BCE. He is best known for his groundbreaking legal code, one of the earliest written legal systems in history, but it is a striking piece of relief sculpture that immortalizes his authority and wisdom in the annals of time. Surrounding this dramatic scene is an inscription containing over 280 laws, covering aspects of daily life from trade regulations to family matters, with punishments that reflect the era’s sense of justice, famously including the principle of “an eye for an eye.”
