Ancient Egyptian Shabti Figurines

In the shadowy tombs of ancient Egypt, an army of tiny servants lies ready to serve their masters in the afterlife. The size and craftsmanship of these figures varied by the status of the individual, with nobility commissioning lavish, ornate designs. By the New Kingdom (circa 1550-1070 BCE), the practice had evolved, leading to a popular standard: each deceased person was expected to have a shabti for every day of the year, plus extra ones for the leap years—an astonishing total of 365 to 730 figurines.

Today, these figurines not only reflect the beliefs and customs surrounding death in ancient Egypt but also serve as a testament to the extraordinary artistry and craftsmanship of their creators.
