Chinese Tang Dynasty Tomb Guardian Figures

Beneath the sprawling sands of Xi’an, China, lay the echoes of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and a treasure trove of its artistry: the exquisite tomb guardian figures known as “sancai.” Discovered in the 1950s, these vibrant, glazed ceramic sculptures stand sentinel over the resting places of the elite, offering stunning insight into the beliefs and customs of one of China’s most prosperous eras.

The tombs, often elaborately constructed, served as final abodes for emperors, nobles, and wealthy individuals. Among the most striking are the life-sized figures, typically measuring around 5 to 7 feet tall, adorned in vivid glazes of green, yellow, and brown. With over 60 figures unearthed, including armored soldiers wielding bows and arrows and elegant ladies in flowing robes, the site painted a vivid picture of Tang society’s grandeur and its hierarchical structures. Archaeologists believe these figures not only served as protectors but also symbolized the status and wealth of the tomb’s occupant.
