Prehistoric Cave Art At Bhimbetka

Deep in the heart of India, nestled in the Vindhya mountain range, lies a breathtaking glimpse into our ancient past: the Bhimbetka rock shelters. Discovered in the 1950s, these caves harbor over 700 distinct rock paintings that date back to an astonishing 30,000 years ago, making them some of the oldest known examples of prehistoric art.

Artists of the Paleolithic era used ochre, charcoal, and other natural pigments to create vivid images of animals—like wild cattle and deer—alongside human activities such as dancing, hunting, and gathering. Archaeological studies have revealed that the Bhimbetka caves were inhabited by nomadic hunter-gatherers, who sought refuge in the rock formations approximately 10,000 years before the advent of agriculture.
