Prehistoric Mastodon Kill Site

In the heart of Pennsylvania’s Appalachian Mountains, a haunting prehistoric site has emerged, revealing a glimpse into the lives of ancient hunters and the majestic creatures they pursued. Discovered in 2021 at a location known as the Manatawny Creek, a team of archaeologists uncovered the remains of a mastodon, dating back approximately 13,000 years, alongside evidence of early human activity.

The site spans about 50 feet and contains the bones of a young mastodon, measuring nearly 10 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 6 tons. Notably, the remains were found with stone tools fashioned from quartz and chert, suggesting a sophisticated understanding of technology used by the Clovis people, one of North America’s earliest known cultures. Analysis of the bones indicates that the mastodon was likely butchered on-site, with cut marks indicative of human intervention still visible on the bones.
