Roman Fresco Showing Household Gods (Lares)

In a remarkable discovery beneath the ash and rubble of Pompeii, archaeologists unveiled a vibrant fresco depicting the Lares, the household gods revered by ancient Romans for their protection and blessings. Dating back to around 1 A.D., this stunning mural was found in a wealthy villa located in the city’s Regio IX, an area once bustling with life before the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

Measuring approximately 3.5 feet by 2.5 feet, the fresco showcases two Lares standing guard, adorned with intricately detailed robes and poised beside offerings of fruit and flowers.
